A Guide To The Different Industrial HVAC Systems

There are multiple types of industrial HVAC systems available today. When selecting an HVAC system for your business, you must first understand the needs of your facility and the type of system that will best meet those needs; such as the building design, air quality and energy efficiency. Some heating and cooling systems work better in larger buildings, while others work better in smaller ones. The local climate may also influence the type of commercial HVAC system required and other factors to consider include your budget and the system’s expected lifespan.

Here is a brief overview of the most common types of industrial HVAC systems and where they are best suited.

Single-split HVAC System

A single split HVAC system consists of a single compressor, an evaporator coil, a furnace and a refrigerant that is designed to cool a single room or area in your commercial space. These systems are most commonly found in small to medium-sized commercial buildings and convenience stores. Single-spilt systems are not suitable for larger buildings with multiple rooms since they cannot evenly cool or heat a large space.

Multi-split System

A multi-split system is similar to a single split system, except that multiple indoor units connect to a single outdoor unit to cool or heat multiple areas of your commercial space. These systems are most commonly used in larger businesses, such as large office buildings and larger retail stores, where cooling or heating of multiple rooms is required and will not suit smaller areas. Multi-split systems are also more energy-efficient than single-split systems as they allow you to target specific areas that need cooling or heating rather than cooling or heating a large space evenly.

Variable Air Volume (VAV)

VAV systems are designed for multi-room spaces and allow different areas of the building to be separately heated and cooled. They create constant, comfortable temperatures by varying airflow. Small offices, for example, can benefit from VAVs because they can maintain different temperature settings in each room. To create an efficient and comfortable environment, VAV systems can be used in conjunction with other types of HVAC systems. VAVs are not suitable for single-story buildings because they are designed to heat or cool multiple areas at the same time.

Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF)

VRF (variable refrigerant flow), also known as VRV (variable refrigerant volume), refers to systems that heat and cool with a refrigerant. VRF systems are highly effective and energy-efficient in moving refrigerants to the zone within a building that needs to be heated or cooled. They are appropriate for a wide range of commercial spaces, including mixed-use facilities. They are not intended for larger indoor assembly spaces because they may not provide adequate airflow to areas within the space.

Constant Air Volume (CAV)

CAVs provide consistent airflow and regulate the building’s climate by adjusting the temperature of the air supply. They work best in large open spaces with few windows, such as an exhibition hall. Consequently, buildings with multiple heating and cooling zones are unsuitable for CAVs since they would require too many ducts and diffusers.

HVAC Heat Pump

A heat pump system can provide heating and cooling by removing heat from the air and moving it inside or outside, depending on whether a building needs to be heated or cooled. Heat pumps work well in various settings such as schools and sports facilities since they can maintain a comfortable temperature range for occupants while also being energy efficient. Heat pumps are not intended for colder climates with temperatures below 40 degrees due to their inefficiency in those conditions.
